Mitchell & Urwin supports Armed Forces

At Mitchell & Urwin we believe that employers should do more to support the Armed Forces, both those still serving and ex-service personnel. Many soldiers find it difficult to find employment after they leave the Forces, while those who want to sign up as a reservist need the flexibility to meet their military commitments. It’s why we have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme and have achieved our Bronze Award. We are now well on our way towards our silver award.

As a bronze award organisation, we have pledged to support the Armed Forces, including existing or prospective employees who are members of the Forces. We also promote being Armed Force-friendly and are open to employing reservists, Armed Forces veterans, cadet instructors and military spouses/partners.

We currently have an army reservist and an ex-serviceman who served in Afghanistan, working as trainee contracts managers as part of the Mitchell & Urwin team. This is what Lee Duddigan, our reservist, has to say about how Mitchell & Urwin has helped him in his military capacity:

“This is my fourth year as a combat Engineer within the Royal Engineers.  My role is to deliver highly flexible and effective engineering solutions in the most challenging of environments.  This involves facilitating movement and support to friendly forces as well as taking on construction tasks required by the army.

I joined the Engineers whilst a subcontractor to Mitchell & Urwin and have continued on as a full time employee. The company has given me the support and encouragement I have needed to become an effective member of my squadron whilst becoming a valid member of the Mitchell & Urwin team.

I have been supported in the time off I have needed to go through basic training and various training exercises both on British soil and abroad.

I have also been shown the support and encouragement I have needed to take part in the training courses the Army put me through.  The skills I learn on these courses – like an intensive leadership course that I will be doing soon – can be transferred into the workplace and benefit both me and the company in my current role as a trainee contracts manager.

It is extremely important to the military that companies give the support needed to current serving reservists and ex-regular military personnel.  It’s brilliant that Mitchell & Urwin supports the military in this way and I’m glad to be part of the team.”

We’re proud of our efforts to support current and previous military personnel and will continue to look for other ways we can support those in the forces.
